Example G.6: Acceleration due to Gravity at a Depth

Example:

The acceleration due to gravity at a depth h below the surface of the Earth is half the value at the surface of the Earth. Find the value of h in terms of the Earth's radius R.

Solution:

From equation (G.10),

Solving for the value of h, we get h = R/2.
