PROPERTIES OF ADDITION

PROPERTY REPRESENTATION EXAMPLE EXPLANATION
Associative a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c
4 + (2 + 3) = (4 + 2) + 3
simplifies to 4 + 5 = 6 + 3 or 9 = 9

When more than two numbers are added,
the grouping of the addends does not change the sum.
Commutative a + b = b + a

2 + 3 = 3 + 2
simplifies to 5 = 5

Changing the order of addends does not change the sum.
Identity a + 0 = a 8 + 0 = 8 The sum of any number and zero is the number itself.


NOTE : Addends are the numbers involved in the addition.
