Example G.4: Acceleration on Other Planets

Example:

The acceleration due to gravity on the Earth is 10 m/s2. Find the acceleration due to gravity on a planet whose mass and radius are 5 times that of the Earth.

Solution:

Let the mass of the planet as well its radius be n times that of the Earth. Using equation (G.4), the acceleration due to gravity gp for the planet is:

Since n = 5, the acceleration due to gravity on the planet is 2.00 m/s2.
